About Durham

They Call Us The “Bull City”

Whether you know of Durham as the “City of Medicine” or the “Bull City” it’s easy to see why so many residents and businesses call Durham home.

Durham was nicknamed the “Bull City” in the late 1800s when the Blackwell Tobacco Company named its product “Bull” Durham Tobacco. By the time James B. Duke of the American Tobacco Company purchased the Blackwell Tobacco Company in 1898, Bull Durham was the most famous trademark in the world.

The “Bull City” prospered as a manufacturing hub for the tobacco industry and textiles for many decades, but has since transformed itself into a place where shopping thrives and high-tech industry flourishes with upscale housing in the same classic buildings where tobacco giants American Tobacco and Liggett-Meyers once made this City their industrial home.

Discover  Durham’s unique shopping opportunities, including the Brightleaf and Ninth Street shopping districts where funky merchandise and unexpected treasures abound.

The Pavilions at the Angus Barn

For all the historic accoutrements and 50 years of Angus Barn folklore that surround you, once you’re at The Pavilion, your nose and your taste buds sense “Iron Chef America” champion Chef Walter Royal’s culinary magic. Every dish is expertly prepped in the Angus Barn kitchen by their award-winning culinary team. Dishes are finished and plated at action stations in The Pavilion kitchen and its outdoor grilling stations. In every sense, The Pavilion is an extension of The Angus Barn.

The William J. Way Memorial Fund was established in 1997 through a generous gift from Katherine Way to commemorate her nephew Bill’s lifetime achievements and dedication to AIDS awareness. Bill worked for the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority for nearly 20 years, serving as its Executive Associate Director for the last 4 years. It was at his urging that Mayor Wilson Goode declared AIDS Awareness Day in Philadelphia. Bill succumbed to complications due to AIDS in 1988. The Memorial Fund will serve as a lasting vehicle for furthering William Way’s personal dedication to bringing public attention to this terrible disease so that more effective means of treatment and prevention would be available to all people.

The mission of the William J. Way Memorial Fund is to bring the most talented scientists in the field of HIV/AIDS research to the Research Triangle area to share their latest findings with the local community of academic and industrial investigators in the true spirit of open collaboration aimed at eradicating this deadly disease.
